Physical illness

When a person is healthy, it is easy to act as if health is a given. However, when living with a physical illness, taking for granted one’s well-being and mortality is simply not an option, for the symptoms are omnipresent and impossible to ignore.

And yet despite the fact that illness is a fact of life, many people choose to avoid the sight of suffering or illness of any kind altogether, choosing to either look away or at the most stare with a childlike curiosity. Even in a 21st century city such as New York, it is still the case that the majority of subway stations and restaurants are not handicap accessible. This unspoken collective blindness inevitably impacts those who are afflicted with illness.

Whether it be cancer, heart disease, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or any of the other countless illnesses out there, it is crucial to have a solid support network to aid in integrating one’s illness into one’s existence in the most productive, proactive, and healthy way possible.

I emphasize the importance of taking care of oneself physically, as well as emotionally and psychologically. Many people living with illness must deal with relationship and work related issues, as well as intrapersonal problems such as depression, shame, and anxiety simply as a result of their condition. My goal is to provide a unique resource for people that live with illness in order to help them live more fulfilling lives. I also understand the importance of taking care of caregivers, which is why I also cater to those who are partners of people with physical illnesses, in addition to family members and close friends.

The goal of my service is to help people with physical challenges better take care of themselves. I offer individual, couple and/or group therapy for people with physical challenges and also for their family, friends, and loved ones.

I am currently running a therapy/support group on Tuesdays from 1pm -2:15pm for people living with chronic health issues.

Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions or to arrange for an initial consultation.
